The skull is simply a symbol for impermanence. It is used in several different kinds of rituals and religious art as a reminder of your own death. The concept of impermanence and continuous becoming is central to early Buddhist teachings. It is by becoming aware of it, by observing it and by understanding it, one can find a suitable remedy for the sorrow of human life and achieve liberation from the process of anicca or impermanence.

Skull signifies strength and is said to amplify prana ( life force energy ). The skull as worn by the Hindu Goddess Kali symbolises liberation, knowledge & wisdom. Legend has it that Parvathi ( Shiva’s wife ) asked him why he wears the garland of heads. To this he replied that every time Parvathi dies, a head gets added to the garland and hence it continues to grow. Nar Mund Mala also called Kapalamala or Rundamala, is a garland of severed human heads and / or skulls, in Hindu iconography and Tibetan Buddhist iconography. In Hinduism, the Munda mala is a characteristic of fearsome aspects of the Hindu Divine Mother and the God Shiva; while in Buddhism, it is worn by wrathful deities of Tibetan Buddhism.
