Primarily cultivated for its fruit, the long pepper is dried and used as a spice and seasoning. It is similar to black pepper in terms of taste. It is often combined with ginger and black pepper to form the famous Trikatu (Three Spices). The key ingredient of Pippali Rasayana, pippali is beneficial for health in a number of ways. A number of health benefits of long pepper are found in Pippali Rasayana as well.

Pippali is widely used in Ayurvedic and Unani systems of medicine particularly for diseases of respiratory tract.
