Navratri Celebrations: 30th Sept. to 8th Oct. 2008

Navratri basically means "Nine Nights" ("Nav" meaning nine and "Ratri" meaning nights). It is a festival of nine nights, during which we worship goddess of Shakti.

When the supreme being begins to manifest its cosmic energy, it is variously known as Sakti, Devi or Divine Mother, who assumes many forms according to the tasks to be preformed by her. She is also known as Durga, Lakshmi or Saraswati in her destructive, protective, and knowledge giving roles respectively.

Navratri festival is observed twice a year, once in the month of Chaitra and then in Aswayuja. It lasts for nine days in honour of the nine manifestations of Durga. During Navratri (the word literally means "nine nights") devotees of Durga observe a fast. Brahmins are fed and prayers are offered for the protection of health and property.              More...

Nine Days of Navratri
Navratri is divided into sets of three days to adore three different aspects of the supreme goddess or goddesses.

First three days
The goddess is invoked as a spiritual force called Durga in order to destroy all our impurities, vices and defects. She personifies that aspect of Shakti which destroys our negative tendencies.

Second three days
The Mother is adored as a giver of spiritual wealth, Lakshmi, who is considered to have the power of bestowing on her devotees inexhaustible wealth.

The final set of three days is spent in worshipping Saraswati, the embodiment of Knowledge. In order to have all-round success in life, believers seek the blessings of all three aspects of the divine femininity, hence the nine nights of worship.
